Ellen Pompeo Signs Two-Year Deals + Grey’s Anatomy renewed for season 9

Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for another season and Ellen has signed up for 2 more!

“Grey’s Anatomy” will reportedly be back with its key castmembers, according to TVLine.

Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, James Pickens, Jr. and Chandra Wilson have all signed on for two more years with the ABC medical drama, although the network has yet to officially order a “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 9 or Season 10.

Fans have been eager to find out about Pompeo and Dempsey’s fates on “Grey’s Anatomy” (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC) — which is now in its eighth season — since the actors’ contracts were expiring. “If I hear from the fans that they want us to keep going, then I would continue because we owe them everything,” Pompeo told TV Guide in October 2011.

“I have a family to support, and why not have a discussion about continuing?” Dempsey said in December. “The question is will I do a full season, a half season or come back at all?”

Showrunner Shonda Rhimes has been teasing a main character death in the upcoming Season 8 finale (Thursday, May 13). She told TV Guide, “”When one of your main characters dies, it always affects the heart and soul of the hospital.” Many viewers speculated it would be Pompeo (Meredith Grey) or Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) due to their contracts ending.

But it now seems like Meredith and Derek, who are choosing between Seattle and leaving for Boston — along with Cristina Yang (Oh), Alex Karev (Chambers), Chief Webber (Pickens, Jr.) and Bailey (Wilson) — will survive and return to Seattle Grace.

So whose “Grey’s” life will come to an end? “It’s a special one this year,” “Grey’s” star Jesse Williams told HuffPost of the finale. “It’s important and it’s tragic.”

Ask Ausiello: Ellen Pompeo Grey’s Anatomy Contract Renew?

There’s still no official word on wether Ellen will be renewing her contract for a 9th season, here’s the scoop from Ausiello:

Question: Any word on the status of contract talks between Grey’s Anatomy and Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, etc.? I’m starting to get nervous. —Carrie
Ausiello: No, but remember how Shonda Rhimes hinted to me last month that the season ends in a way that could accommodate any number of possible cast departures? Well, get this: I hear a late April episode will follow Alex, Meredith, Jackson, April and Cristina as they interview for fellowship positions at other hospitals around the country. Said hospitals are apparently wooing the quintet in anticipation of them passing their boards — and they’re wisely entertaining all of their options.

Grey’s Anatomy Scoop: Adele’s Alzheimer’s Takes a Turn for the Worse

Richard’s had a rough year on Grey’s Anatomy already having taken the fall for Meredith and stepped down as Chief of Seattle Grace. Now Adele’s illness may pull him from the hospital altogether.

“Adele’s Alzheimer’s is progressively getting worse,” James Pickens Jr. tells TVGuide.com. “It’s obvious now that the Alzheimer’s is making her a danger to herself and possibly others. We have something coming up that really brings the seriousness of her condition to the floor and forces him to act right away.”

The incidents — yes, that’s plural — will take place in this Thursday’s episode and will end up being the catalyst for Richard to realize that he can no longer leave Adele (Emmy winner Loretta Devine) alone.

While Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) insists that Richard check Adele into Rose Ridge — the same assisted living establishment that her mother, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) once resided at — he’s in complete denial. “He still loves Adele very deeply, and he doesn’t want to think about the possibility that there may have to be some other options made in terms of her living arrangements and her being cared for,” Pickens says. “He doesn’t want to make that decision right now.”

Meredith understands what Richard is going through. “She went through this thinking she could handle it herself, and then it just gets to a point where it’s more than you can handle,” Pompeo says. “No convincing by Meredith is going to make Richard OK with putting Adele in a home. He has to get to a place where he feels like it’s his only option.”
